Playing a central role in Thai traditional medicine
Wat Pho was built in the 18th century and is the oldest temple in Bangkok.
In the 19th century, by order of King Rama III, Wat Pho came to play a central role in Thai traditional medicine as a place where knowledge of traditional medicine, pharmacology and massage from all over the country was collected.
Thai Traditional Medicine School is born
In 1955, the School of Traditional Thai Medicine was established within the temple, and since then it has contributed to the dissemination of traditional Thai medicine and the training of successors in both practical and theoretical fields.
In 1991, a specialized massage course was offered.
Sukhumvit Branch opened
In 1998, to meet the needs of more learners, the Sukhumvit Branch was opened, offering classes in both Japanese and English.
Conveniently located in Sukhumvit, Bangkok, you can receive the same lessons as at our main branch (Wat Pho temple).
Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
In 2019, Thai traditional massage was registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and its value was recognized worldwide.
Thai traditional massage, which has been handed down for over 2,500 years and is based on the ideas of Buddhism and Oriental medicine, is not just a form of relaxation but is highly regarded as a traditional medical treatment that balances the mind and body.
This registration has further drawn attention to the site as a cultural heritage that should be learned and passed down not only in Thailand but around the world.

Sukhumvit Branch is a branch of the Wat Pho Massage School (main branch), known as the headquarters of Thai traditional massage.
With 27 years of experience since its opening, it is the only school outside of Thailand where you can study the official curriculum approved by Wat Pho in both English and Japanese.
Since its opening, the school has produced many graduates from Japan and around the world.
